Ankle Sprain Symptoms
Common signs of an ankle sprain include:
- Pain, especially when you put weight on the foot
- Swelling and bruising around the ankle
- Tenderness when you touch the area
- Stiffness and a limited range of motion
- A popping sensation at the moment of injury
- The ankle feeling wobbly, or “giving way”
How we treat it
We start by finding out exactly what’s going on. A careful hands-on exam — plus an X-ray when needed to rule out a fracture — tells us how severe the sprain is. From there, we build a plan around your injury and your life.
For most sprains, conservative care does the job: rest and activity guidance, ice and compression to control swelling, and a brace or walking boot to protect the joint while it heals. As pain eases, we focus on rehabilitation — gentle exercises that rebuild strength, balance, and flexibility, so your ankle ends up stable, not just pain-free. For more severe ligament injuries, we may recommend a period of immobilization and a structured rehab plan, and we’ll talk honestly with you about what to expect at each stage.
When to see a doctor
- You can’t bear weight on the foot, or walking is severely painful
- Swelling that doesn’t improve after a few days of rest and ice
- Numbness in the foot, or the ankle looks deformed
- The ankle keeps giving way, or you’ve sprained the same ankle before
- Pain that persists beyond a week or two despite home care
