Foot Fracture Symptoms
Signs you may have a fracture include:
- Immediate, sharp pain at the time of injury
- Swelling and bruising
- Being unable to put weight on the foot
- Tenderness when you touch the area
- A foot or ankle that looks deformed or out of place
- With stress fractures: pain that builds gradually and worsens with activity
How we treat it
Accurate diagnosis comes first. A careful exam plus X-rays — and advanced imaging when we need a closer look — tells us exactly which bone is broken and how serious the break is. Many fractures heal very well without surgery: immobilization in a walking boot, brace, or cast protects the bone while it mends, along with rest and a gradual, guided return to activity.
We monitor your healing with follow-up imaging and rehab guidance to restore strength, flexibility, and balance once the bone is ready. For fractures that are displaced or unstable, we’ll coordinate surgical care with a trusted specialist and support you through recovery afterward — you’ll always know what to expect and what’s next.
When to see a doctor
- You heard a snap or pop at the time of injury
- You can’t bear weight on the foot
- The foot or ankle looks deformed
- Severe swelling that doesn’t start to ease
- Numbness in the foot or toes
- There’s an open wound near the injury — seek emergency care
